Archive of first rant

This is an archive of the first post on the website. I'll add it to blogs and make a proper "manifesto later". for not I just wanted to get it off the main page so I can actually make the site proper.

If you are reading this, then i have finally gotten off my ass and started the process of making an html site on a site called neo cities. Barebones at the moment but I need something that functions before making it pretty. Very start now make it better later mentality i need start taking to heart.

Now you may be asking reasonable questions like: Why? You've said this in the past, what makes this different? And when's the next video? You promised a new video.

Hope to answer all of these questions. Except for that last one, because time is an ever eroding hour glass, that always seems to escape me.

The short answer: I'm sick of social media, I wanna be expressive and a place you can find MOST of my stuff that has more personality than a link tree. The only thing that's different is hopefully that starting the process makes me invested.

The long answer: *INHAILS*

I think in a lot of ways I've reached a breaking point with the modern web, social media, and tech. Ads are the most atrocious they've ever been. Companies want to know ever peice about Social media is an endless scroll for a dopamine hit so you stay on there longer.

Even decentralized platforms have just made me disillusioned for many reasons. Fediverse is decentralized, but it's cumbersome. Atproto might as well be just be bluesky and its moderation and vibecoding nightmare. Surprised the pds arent underwater. Both protocals also have this weird infighting that's made me tired and bitter about the whole experiment.

And people, somehow, have gotten nastier. I'm not sure how much of that is true, it worst kinds of people are just more visible it just feels worse now. Personally, I'm willing ti believe the later. Bluesky has been my final staw in that regard due to a series of just plain bad experiences with chronically online people. Which WILD coming from the reculse.

I think the past 3 years have rubbed me such a wrong way I think I want to disenage from social media platforms altogether or atleast severely limit my time on them. I've this in the past but no bro, this shit sucks.

I still want to share things. I still want to make "User Generated Content" (dare I say *GASP* ART). People still are making cool things despite everything that is happening. While these platforms are good for descoverability, I think i just want a place to call my own and if people find my stuff... The find mystuff. Who kniws maybe kagi will feature me in the futrue on small web. Linktree and other services get the job done but like alot of the modern internet, they're kind of bland to be honest.

I've wanted to make a neo cities site for a while now. Originally i thought it would be a fun side project to try make things I'd wanted to see on the web. This never happened due to me not having the motivation nor time to do some. Like I wanted to do this, but but didnt have much of a point for it.

There's a concept in the indie web "make what you need." And what I found that I needed was not me making a recreation of ps2 demo discs (though that would be sick), what I needed was mostly:

These are only the start. Wouldnt mind having my blog rambles moved to here as well since I dont REALLY need the fediverse intergration like I though i did, and maybe list of curated sites.

Main goal right now is have something that works and make it look pretty when I can. The main focus right now is having a working nav with an about me section and some test pages and we'll go from there. This is a learning experience

first and for most. See above at the start of this article.

Now neocities does have a social media component, but the static websites are the main focus. I want a site that's mine and fo now a host that is free or 5 bucks if i wanted at my scale makes the most sense right now.

I understand that maybe me doing this in the face big tech and with current state of the world will look like a pointless endevour or there are more important i coild be doing with my time. And maybe you're right.

I'm not here to act like this some grand act of rebellion. That this will magically take us back to the "good ole days." That me making a website for myself is going to change the world. I'm not even saying you should do what I'm doing.

But it is something I want to try. Maybe ignite some whimsy again. Some love for computering and the internet that I've spent so much time on. And maybe that's enough for now.
